That's why Not Just Pretty clothing works with innovative designers who are helping to lessen the global impact of chemical fertilizers and industrial waste by using sustainable and organic fabrics. Working in communities around the world, and studios in our own West Coast backyard, these designers are pushing fashion towards a greener tomorrow with both new technologies and centuries old ideas. Many of our designers, including Twice Shy, Loomstate, and Blue Canoe, use organic cotton. Traditional cotton crops are some of the most chemically dependent in the world, and account for nearly a quarter of the world's insecticide use. Organic cotton is grown without the use of harmful chemical fertilizers and pesticides - about a third of a cup of this nasty stuff is needed to produce your average cotton tee. Other designers are looking toward hearty ancient crops that need less space, and less chemical pampering. Hemp is one of these resilient varieties - it grows dense, yielding more usable fibre per acre than any other crop in the world, and shouldering out weeds without the help of herbicides. At Not Just Pretty, designers such as ninA Valenti of naturevsfuture combine hemp with soft fibres for strong and beautiful designs. Soy, the super-star legume, can be mashed and spun into just about anything. So why not super-soft "vegetable cashmere"? Soy fabric is made from the byproduct of the tofu making process - its prevalence makes it easy to come by and its high protein count makes it receptive to natural dyes. Bamboo is a dense and fast-growing crop - some varieties climb 3-5 centimeters each day, requiring little tending or encouragement. Soft and luxurious bamboo fabrics are becoming an it-fabric for eco-minded designers. Another innovative trend in modern eco-fashion is the use of recycled fabrics and abandoned materials, re-loved into beautiful, unique pieces.
